Michael Dee
Through playing in bands, flying airplanes, and working in factories
I became interested in white noise and the effects it has on people.
My work addresses
the anxiety just under the surface of everyday life. Feedback, familiar
warnings, self-absorbed rock stars, malfunctioning machines, and temporary
fix
medications symbolize a world which is nearly too fast and too disorienting
to keep up with. Most pieces utilize video’s distant quality to
alienate the viewer
from sound sources, other individuals, environments, and iconic objects.
I want to create anxious spaces where claustrophobia would be accepted
and expected
as a natural reaction to one’s surroundings.
I
am living in New York and working on digital prints, videos, and a sound
machine for my next one person show. Since August, I have been working
as an art teacher at a private school. I have two cats who are named
Arf and Kokobi. They don't make art or work as art instructors, however
they do like my enamel paintings of video static. You can't touch me,
I'm an idea.
