Ann Kaneko
Ann Kaneko is a Los Angeles-based independent filmmaker. She recently
returned from Lima, Peru, where she was a Fulbright Fellow, making a
new
documentary Against the Grain, about Peruvian political artists in the
post-Fujimori era. She was a participant in the American Film Institute's
Directing Workshop for Women where she completed 100% Human Hair, a
17-minute musical extravaganza set in a Los Angeles wig shop. She is
a principal collaborator with Cid Pearlman¹s Nesting Dolls Dance
Company and created video backgrounds for Drive, a mixed media dance
piece mounted at the Getty Museum in June 2001. They are currently developing
High Fall which wll be performed at Highways in December 2002.
Her
insightful Japan Foundation-funded documentary, Overstay, about foreign
migrant workers in Japan, has screened domestically and internationally
to enthusiastic audiences. Ann has made several short films, among them,
Lucy Goes Shopping, A Shortness of Breath and Displaced which have screened
at film festivals worldwide. Ann is also a cinematographer and has shot
numerous documentaries and shorts. She graduated from UCLA with an MFA
in Directing for Film and Television.
