Virginia Valdes
Virginia Valdes' work comes from a non-narrative
sensibility aiming to push the individual outside of this world into
a dimension that is unnatural in context, yet familiar. Using video,
photography, illustration and music, often mixing all the mediums in
the same piece, she creates a space that lies between the subconscious
and the cinematic.
Working as a graphic artist, web designer, photographer and video artist
she naturally blends all the different techniques. Whereas the final
piece is a video including treated photography and vintage Super 8 footage,
or a print incorporating video stills, old advertisements, and clip
art, the resulting visual landscape is the perfect terrain for an alternative
and sometimes haunting reality.
Valdes' works have been shown across the country in art centers and
screening houses such as P.S.1/MOMA and Lincoln Center where 'Just Another
Day Without You' was part of the 2002 New York Film and Video festival.
Upcoming shows include V.I.D. at Dampfzentrale Bern, Switzerland on
Decemter 15, 2002 and a collaborative piece with filmmmaker Arnold Barkus
and pianist/composer Frederic Rzewski’ for his world premiere
of "The Road" at The Kitchen in New York this coming February,2003.
Virginia
Valdes lives and works in Long Island City, NY.
