Liu Wei
This is a human
being who just walked away from the sealed "forbidden city",
dragging with him a long and gray shadow that reflects his struggling
out from the rural civilization as well as his dubious and anxious
entry into to the highly commercialized society.
He is now in the city where the commercial culture fills everywhere.
People lead their lives on a floating and swelling materialized mountain
without knowing that the bottom is nowhere. A pervasive flood of images
and forms have been pouring in from every direction, overfilling his
eyes and ears, leaving him too powerless to make his own judgments.
When nights approach the city with colorful neon lights, he feels
he is becoming a puppet controlled by desire and temptation, playing
different roles in the noisy city life.
As an artist living in the city marked with consumer culture, I admit
I hate but I cannot get away. I feel I am pressed and distorted by
an invisible power, forcing some changes within me. I then keep struggling
to seek the proof of my real existence in this heavily materialized
world, only to find my efforts getting thinner and thinner, and finally
fading away into the fantasy city life.
