showcased drawn and painted artworks by our participants at the local California Institute for Women with CDCR approval.
In response to the participants’ call for exhibition opportunities, PAC’s Teaching Artists invited the women at CIW to create site specific works especially for the community event and for those attending! At the event, PAC Teaching Artists and Alumni invited visitors to respond creatively to each of their artworks in hope to establish innovative and personalized connections.
PAC’s community space at the Justice + Art Jam was made up of 2 bright, open-air tents, invitingly adorned with colored signage and photographs. Within the tents, creative tables were set up where visitors can participate in the responsive art-making project and art supply preparation for the participants inside Centinela State Prison, the California Institute for Men and CIW. A list of the participant’s first names were provided so that visitors can personalize their creations and supplies. PAC’s participation at the Justice + Art Jam offered them an opportunity to engage a wider community to be creative, provide practical support and to reflect on our belief that ‘art is a human right’.
