Video on the Loose

To celebrate twenty years of Freewaves, we produced a book and double-DVD package, titled “Video on the Loose: Freewaves and 20 Years of Video Arts.” The book opens with an epigraph from Freewaves director Anne Bray: “You can’t show sex, you can’t show lo-tech, you can’t have any swear words, you can’t show any appropriation and a high percentage of what we show is one of those things!” and contains essays from Bill Kelley, Jr., and Kenneth Rogers, and an interview with Bray.

The DVDs had four programs: Pop Cop, Trouble, Dual/Duel, and Squirm, with artists including Matt Dibble, Gustavo Artigas, Zouia Hou, and Joanna Priestly. For the release party, the videos from the DVD were projected and presented throughout LACMA’s outdoor courtyard.

Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
