Because California did not have a media arts curriculum until 2023, it fell to artists to become teachers of these new art forms and platforms, and Freewaves has consistently featured the work of young people and students in our programming. In 1993 we worked with Southern California Youth Media Programs to produce a catalog and video showcasing the work of students and other young people. The catalog also included information about artist’s residencies and other resources.
Below: Catalog listing the names of artists and video projects of media arts programs throughout Southern California. Media arts programs represented in catalog include artist residency programs in schools, youth centers, hospitals, and teacher-initiated programs. Catalog also lists media distributors across Los Angeles; Technical support of program provided by VIDKIDCO and the Long Beach Museum of Art; 45 pages.
Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
