The First Broadcasts

Throughout our first ten years,  Freewaves put together independent video programs including art and documentary work that toured California and eventually aired nationally and internationally. Broadcasters included KCET PBS, Deep Dish TV, Free Speech TV, 90s Channel, and Moscow TV. Our work also aired on public access television stations in Los Angeles and elsewhere. In the nineties, public access tv—a non-commercial channel that airs content created by the public—was an important programming space for video art, experimental film, independent media, and more.

Below, promotional material for Freewaves’ collaboration with Deep Dish TV Network from March 23-July 1st, 1993.

Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
