Hollywould

By placing Hollywood in the conditional tense–Hollywould–Freewaves invited artists to explore what images and stories could be, as well as what they are, while exploring the role of art in mass-media-saturated culture and the future of gentrifying neighborhoods in cities throughout the world.

We transformed the Hollywood Walk of Fame into a massive, multi-faceted screening room for experimental videos, films and media art from every continent. Works were displayed on LCD screens inside stores, installed in storefront windows and activated with walking tours. We put on workshops using GPS technology to create personally annotated multimedia maps of the area. This festival was our first time placing art inside Los Angeles buses, with monitors showing media art to more than a million people daily. (A satellite program also showed work inside buses in Atlanta, Georgia.)

Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
