Our first festival in the new millennium featured more than eighteen screenings, five installations, two web-based pieces, and six related exhibitions, but the most memorable part of Air Raids was the Video Bus Tours. Artists and activists took viewers on tours of the Los Angeles they saw, stopping at significant locations and screening video art inside the buses between stops. Programs included a queer tour of Hollywood, a “Hidden Labor” tour that charted the city from the perspective of migrant women and domestic workers, and a tour tracing the indigenous cultures of Los Angeles.
Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
