Our first three festivals were intentionally dispersed throughout Los Angeles, in order to reach and work with as many communities and cultures as possible. For our fourth festival, we wanted to gather the community that was forming in response to this work, to be all in the same place at once. At the John Anson Ford Theater in the Hollywood Hills, we put on a program that included live performances and video art, and created a brochure listing video rental stores, cable stations, media art programs, advocacy groups, video facilities, and TV viewer comment lines. Artists included Eui Joon Kim, Roger Guenveur Smith, Maria Elena Gaitan, Ray Bravo, and Matthew McDaniel. Freewaves also produced five one-hour programming blocks that were shown on cable television in 1994 and 1998.
Freewaves is currently deepening and reorganizing our archive of 35 years of public art in Los Angeles. Check back in 2025 to explore more of our history.
